I will often top up like this when I eat eggs for example. I don't want to eat too many whole eggs at a time, but then the overall protein content of the meal might be a bit low. To solve this I'll mix up a Whey protein shake to drink at the same time.
Because Whey is a fast absorbed protein, ideal times to take it are whenever you need a fast digesting protein. The other great thing about Whey powder is, it's very fast to prepare. If you're short on time, it's perfect as an easy, clean protein meal on the go.
Three times of day when Whey protein is ideal.1) The key time is the 'window of opportunity' after a workout or physical activity. This is immediately after exercise, and extends for roughly up to 2 hours after (although I don't recommend waiting that long!). Whey is the right protein shake option at this time. Its muscle support amino's get straight to work to help repair and rebuild.
2) Another perfect time is at breakfast. Because it's the first meal for a long time, the fast uptake and easy digestion of Whey makes it ideal for a first daily protein source. I always have a Whey shake at this time. Sometimes I don't feel like eating much for breakfast, Whey is easiest. I usually want to save time too, so it's great for that.
3) Another useful time of day is around 60 minutes before exercise. Because Whey is naturally very high in Branched Chain Amino Acids, it's a good way to help insure a supply of these for training. To help keep energy levels high and help protect muscle from being broken down during your workouts, it's a good idea to take Whey at this time.
If you have questions about Whey or you want to know how to get more out of it personally to suit you, let me know.
